Born, raised and currently living in Philadelphia, Steve Weinik hates artist statements that use words like "bridge" and "transcend." This doesn't mean that Weinik is a shallow, cynical or mean spirited jerk, just that the form and function of a "proper" artist statement is something that puts him off. They're also incredibly dull. For example:

Weinik's images transcend traditional boundaries by building bridges between the observer and observed.

Beh.

With that said, Weinik - in fact - has an abiding appreciation for the concepts loaded clumsily into words of all sizes and shapes. These concepts are what he tries to capture in the best of his work.

But seriously, why do I make photographs? I enjoy it. I'm never more present than when I'm shooting. It stimulates and relaxes the mind and body. It communicates vision. It tells a story through observation. It creates its own commentary. It's also the only career that I want. These are the reasons that I make photographs.
